Primary Mathematics Assessment Video Clips - Context

During 2015-16 a pupil assessment video project was started in Fareham and Gosport. The aim of this project was to support teacher assessment of pupil’s conceptual and procedural understanding of mathematics at different points in the year related to the HAM phase model. A group of teachers from infant, junior and primary schools across the two districts were invited to take part. This project has produced some short video clips of pupils from Y1 to Y6 both talking through their thinking and producing paper and pencil recording in response to a selection of the NCETM Mastery booklet tasks. The pupils were selected to be those who the teacher involved thought was ‘working at expected’ at that point in the year. Several pupils have been videoed in both November and February. Some pupils are only part of one group of videos in November of February.

The video clips are not intended as examples of how to teach mathematics but of the questions and prompts that might illicit responses from pupils that support teachers to make accurate assessments.

After each assessment interview the group of teachers decided as a group whether the pupil was ‘securely on track’ or whether the pupil was ‘close to’ or ‘beyond’ at that point in the year. A judgement of ‘securely on track’ in November or February therefore does not necessarily mean that the pupil has an end of year understanding (ARE) at that point but is likely to do so by the end of the year

What’s in them?

  • Phase 1 (November) videos: These video clips of Y1 to Y6 pupils are focused on calculation.
  • Phase 2 (February) videos: These video clips of
  • Phase 3 (July) videos: These video clips of Y5 and Y6 pupils are focused on fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

When might they be used?

  • in school moderation - Mathematics managers might select a clip to support a staff meeting or year group/ phase meeting to support discussion and exemplify expectations for a domain at that point in the year
  • inter-school moderation
  • professional development focused on adult questioning and pupil talk for class teachers or Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) - Mathematics managers or SENCo might select a clip to support discussion and exemplify expectations for a domain at that point in the year
